If you're looking for a good book to read, I recommend Searching For God Knows What, by Donald Miller. Wow, he hits right on some of my favorite themes, and expands them. If you read it, you'll see what I'm talking about.
Anyone read this one before?
Yeah, it is a good read. Probably Miller's best book. What I liked the most is he points to how we view people. I was convicted as I read his book, I really judge people a lot. Especially Baptists...but I'm over that now. (That is a joke BTW.)
ReplyDeleteHa! I'm not over it with Baptists myself.
ReplyDeleteIf you remember the "lifeboat" metaphor, it's really a perfect description of how we tend to compare ourselves to others.
Even non-Baptists do that.
But unlike so many others, we mythics stand against comparing.
(that's a joke, too)
Loved it, man. I thought he was brilliant with this book.
ReplyDeleteWhat I thought about over and over and still think about today is the chapter on Why Nudity is the Point. And of course it is the point. It meshes with the good old life boat theory, but to me this goes a step beyond. It is an interesting question, actually - where did clothes come from? And I don't know how you answer that without some acceptance that there is something more to a human, something more to our story, some glory and some shame, that goes beyond animalia.
And no, you don't need a complex, systematic theology worked up to ask or answer that question, just an open and honest heart. God can take it from there.
If you are reading this thread, you MUST be intrigued by this book now.
ReplyDeleteLife boats, judgmentalism, nudity, animalia... it's all in there.
I invite you to read it, then weigh in here. I'll send you my copy, if you want.
If you don't have any takers on that book I'll pick it up from you during Thanksgiving if you guys still plan on going.
ReplyDeleteYou got it. I'll bring it up.
