The biggest criticism coming from the fundamentalist camp is that the truth of the gospel is not explicitly stated in the movie.
Take a few moments to meditate on that charge. It is so revealing as to shed light on the darkness around the very ones making the charge.
The truth of the gospel is not explicitly stated
I ask you, can truth be explicitly stated?
When truth, even the good news of the gospel, is packaged in the form of a rational explanation (propositionally, objectively) independent of story it ceases to be truth, and is reduced to mere facts. Truth is best (only?) conveyed implicitly in the form of story.
Huge difference between truth and facts.
Truth is experienced, not agreed to. Truth is reflected, not stated. It grows, moves, changes, engulfs, devours. There is more 'gospel' in the movie Napoleon Dynamite than there is in a theology book. Leisurely read through the words of Jesus, and see how explicit He was with "truth."
The fundamentalists are right--the truth of the gospel is not explicitly stated in Edge of the Spear.
Whew. That's a relief.
Let the light of the good news of the kingdom shine on its own.
